Yesterday my car broke down for the 4th or 5th time in the last two months. On a blazing hot day when the cold that Cane gave me over the weekend decided to fully bloom. In the middle lane of traffic on a busy street. At 3:45Β pm. (My antecedents aren’t very clear, but it really doesn’t matter. The breakdown, the blooming–it all happened at 3:45Β in the middle lane of traffic on a busy street.)
I limped home at around 7:00. Literally–I had blisters on the bottom of my feet by the time I got there, after walking from the auto repair place.
But today is a new day!
The sun is still shining, but the temps are supposed to drop down to 80. I had already planned to take today off, so no work obligations for the car to wreak havoc with. I can be here when the garage door guy comes to fix the door a child broke last weekend by rolling the car into it. (Man, that car is the source of all trouble this week. Should just get rid of it!)
Nothing to do but sneeze and blow my nose and play with my collage.
And maybe take an afternoon nap with this girl.
Right after the garage door guy comes.
Rita, this made me laugh, because it’s just so real. The reason I keep reading your blog is because it’s not about a perfect life with perfect meals and fresh-scrubbed air-brushed reality. Instead of reading blogs that make me feel inadequate (like why do I not make school lunches in the shape of Star Wars characters??) I have learned that I enjoy reading the writing of people who I feel I could be friends with. π
That’s about the highest compliment you could give me. Thank you! (FWIW, I don’t think I could ever be friends with people who make lunches in the shape of anything but, well, rectangles and triangles. Maybe squares. And definitely only 2-D.) π
I read this post this morning just before I began spring cleaning, and Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” immediately began playing in my brain — the refrain of which is actually quite lovely (even if some of the lyrics are ever so slightly depressing, if true!). It’s probably entirely wrong for me to say thank you, but your “sunny side up” cheeriness-despite-it-all, along with the song, leant quite an upbeat tone to my morning’s dusting and sweeping π . I do hope the garage door man arrived in a timely fashion, and you were able to get on with your day. (Love how the tree is shaping up, btw!)
And I just have to add — I do hope the break-down in the middle of the intersection wasn’t punctuated by a chorus of honking and swearing? Your incident is reminding me of the time my husband was teaching me to drive a stick shift and I stalled the car in the middle of a very busy intersection and for the life of me couldn’t get it going again. Traffic was blocked and we ended up doing a run-around the car to switch him into the driver’s seat and me into the passenger … and not a single person beeped at us, which I still consider to be somewhat miraculous π .

Well, maybe the difference between your experience and mine is the difference between being Canadian and American. There was honking and swerving and swearing. (OK, the swearing was from me.) I am glad you didn’t have such an experience!
The garage door man came on time, and that was relatively painless. The tree is still as it was. I was too sick to really do anything yesterday–and was just grateful that I could take the day to be sick. Glad you had a good morning, too.
Oh, if my incident of 23 years ago were to be transported to present-day I have no doubt it would have elicited major honking and swearing — I’m constantly seeing evidence that shows we Canadians are losing our stereotypically polite society. In hindsight I shouldn’t have asked such a Duh question, Rita … Of course there would have been honking and swearing π . I’m sorry you had to go through that. I hope the worst of your cold is over now, and that you have a good weekend.

Oh, no! Say it isn’t so! (I love that Canadians are polite.)
So sorry you had a crappy day yesterday! I’ve had myriad cars in my lifetime that each let me down on multiple occasions and it’s definitely no fun! Happy to hear you were able to glass-half-full it today though. π Love your new tree branch with your house. This is a “slog to get through it” week for me physically and now that I’ve made it through workday three with my eyes still open (notice I did not choose the word awake ha!) I am looking forward to the extremely creative art of…napping and making a dent in my dvr backlog. Emphasis on the former. I hope you were indeed able to get a nap in this afternoon too! I may nap right up until bedtime. π

Hope you’re still slogging on–and that by the time you read this it will be Friday! Yay! I love Friday.
When I grow up, I going to have cars that don’t let me down. Among other things. π
I am sorry about your suckish day and that you got the man cold.
And your comment on Facebook about your informal poll on white men in pickup trucks is spot on.
Go snuggle with the dog and feel better soon, my dear friend.
By the way, isn’t your LTYM performance coming up soon??

Two weeks from tonight. I will be sweating buckets and calming butterflies and wondering why in the heck I signed up to scare the pants off myself. Yeah, thanks for asking! π
Yay for looking on the bright side? Ugh to the man cold and car breaking down. Here’s hoping your week is looking up. P.s. I am happy that you are writing so frequently π

The week is looking up because it’s almost done! Some weeks are like that, no? I’m happy to write frequently, too. Two posts in one week hasn’t happened for quite a while. Glad to see an update from you today.
Naps are the greatest. Hope your cold is dissipating and your car (and your garage) is all better. I just noticed I’ve been wearing my shirt inside out all morning, so I think I may have to go take one myself. π

You are my kind of people, Kate.
Love how the collage is coming together…especially the meandering branches.
Car trouble. I finally decided to trade in my 11 yr old van earlier this year. Downsized to a Honda HRV after 15 yrs of a mini-van. Kind of fun driving something smaller, less about function.

I know I should get a new car. I just feel too overwhelmed right now to even begin. So I make trees and houses out of paper…
Cars are nothing but trouble! Second only to houses ;).
